Mar. 29- Apr. 2 Happenings

Middle School Students and High School Students participating in solo/ensemble remember to be practicing regularly as our performances are less than a month away. Be prepared to work through the entire piece with your accompanist. Lack of preparation will be reflected not only in your rating at contest, but also in your grade for middle school students.


MS

5th Band
  • Concert Bb exercises on Pg. 28 and 40 of EE, #1, 2,
  • Chromatic Scale
  • Play through Power Rock
  • Rehearse Creepy Crawlies, increasing the speed with the eighth note parts, and focusing on the length of notes
  • Rehearse Companions in the Quest, focusing on the opening measures and reading through the end of the piece
  • Read through The Lost City

6th Band

  • Concert Scales and Chromatic
  • Rehearse Forward March, performing full runs
  • Reheasre The Tempest, foucsing on dynamics and tempo
  • Read through African Folk Songs, identifying and play the melody in each section

7/8th Band

  • Concert Scales and Chromatic
  • Rehearse Jefferson County Overture, focusing on the slow section and articulations
  • Rehearse Finuclui, Finicula, continuing to explain 6/8 meter and incorporating dynamics
  • Rehearse Tribute and Triumph, begin breaking the piece into sections for rhearsal and work on trumpet parts

HS

  • Concert Scale and Chromatic Exercises
  • Air For Band, bring out inner voices and reinforce counting, begin to incorporate balanced dynamics
  • Encanto, continue to work woodwinds for tempo and focus on the slow section as well as clean attacks
  • Valdres, continue working sections, focus on upper woodwind sixteenth note passages

6th Band

  • Continue Concert Bb, Eb, F, Ab, and Chromatic Scales
  • Hand out African Folk Songs and read through
  • Continue working Forward March, focusing on accurate percussion parts and the opening section
  • Continue working The Tempest, focusing on adding in dynamics

7/8th Band

  • Continue Concert C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, G, D, A, E, and Chromatic Scales
  • Distribute new concert music and read through
  • Continue working on Jefferson County Overture, focusing on the andante section and the percussion parts
  • Continue work on Funiculi, Funicula, focusing on reading rhythms in 6/8
  • Re-visit past pieces in search of concert line-up, Silver Star, Wyndemere, Etc...

HS

  • Continue with Concert Scales, Thirds, and Now Minors
  • Rehearse Air for Band, idenifying similar voice parts and begin working dynamics and intonation
  • Rehearse Valdres, working upper woodwind figures and becoming familiar with the form
  • Rehearse Encanto, working to bring up speed of upper woodwinds, flute solo, and mixed-meter section
  • Collect old music and file
  • Possibly ask for some help with music library

Mar. 15-19 Happenings

All band students that will be performing solos next month need to be prepared to play through their entire solo by next week as accompanists will begin attending lessons. Please come prepared and be working on your solo. This week we have a three day weekend so be sure to bring your instrument home and take advantage of the extra practice time.



MS

5th Band
  • Rehearse Concert Bb Scale Pg. 28 and Pg. 40 #1, 2
  • Play through Power Rock
  • Play through Creepy Crawlies, working on speeding up eighth note passages and counting
  • Rehearse Companions in the Quest, spend time working independent parts at the beginning
  • Retraining of classroom procedures

6th Band

  • Rehearse Concert Scales and Chromatic
  • Rehearse Forward March, our goal is to play all the way through
  • Rehearse The Tempest, work with trumpets at 45 and speed up saxes
  • Distribute new music

7/8th Band

  • Rehearse Concert Scales and Chromatic
  • Rehearse Jefferson County Overture, focusing on the slow section and percussion parts
  • Rehearse Wyndemere Overture, focusing on the opening measures
  • Distribute and read through new music

HS

  • Continue reading through new music for Large Group Contest

Mar. 8-12 Happenings

Note: Mr. Pedersen will be attending APL Training Wednesday and Thursday this week. There will be a substitute those days so all band rehearsals and lessons will take place. Be sure to come to your lesson and be prepared to play through your solo. Also, Tuesday evening at 7:00 the Pops Concert will take place in the Graettinger HS Gym. Please come and support our music and dance programs!

Parents: Please make sure your students are practicing at home as much as possible. They will be performing a solo in April and regular individual practice is the key to them having a successful and rewarding experience.

MS

5th Band:

  • Continue working Concert Bb from Pg. 28 in EE and Pg. 40 in EE
  • Rehearse Power Rock to increase tempo and correct note length
  • Rehearse Creepy Crawlies focusing on speeding up sixteenth note parts and adding dynamics
  • Rehearse Companions in the Quest focusing on playing through the entire piece by working on the opening measures and working the rest of the piece in small sections
  • Mr. Pedersen will be looking for more new music for this band

6th Band:

  • Continue working Concert and Chromatic Scales, paying close attention to articulations
  • Rehearse The Tempest focusing on dynamics and articulations, and working with saxes and trumpets to improve their parts respectively (full run in two weeks)
  • Rehearse Forward March working it as three different sections, beginning, middle, and end with the beginning needing the most work. Pay extra attention to percussion parts
  • Mr. Pedersen will be looking for more new music for this band

7/8th Band:

  • Continue working Concert and Chromatic Scales
  • Perform multiple runs of Forrest Gump and The Pink Panther for the Pops Concert
  • Collect Pops Concert Music on Wednesday
  • Begin working on new tunes for Spring Concert

HS

  • Perform final rehearsals with videos for Pops Concert Music
  • Address any last minute musical problems, and continue to work intonation and phrasing in Navy Hymn
  • Collect Pops Concert music on Wednesday
  • Distribute new music for Fine Arts Concert/Large Group Contest
