Feb. 9-13 Happenings

This week in the middle school we will begin selecting our solos for our annual solo contest which will be held on Monday, April 20th in Graettinger.

5th

Objectives:
  • Read and rehearse full band pieces
  • Rehearse Concert Bb Scale
Warm-Up:
  1. EE Pg. 12 Tone Builder and Rhythm Etude
  2. Rehearse Full Chromatic Scale from Concert Bb to Concert Bb
    1. Up and Down
  3. Rehearse Bb Major Scale on Pg. 28 #147
Music Rehearsal:

  1. Featuring…The Band
    1. Rehearse in sections
    2. Identify and discuss melody vs. harmony
      1. Who is the most important part?
    3. Incorporate some accessory percussion parts with Josh during rests
    4. Look for dynamics
    5. Goal to perform a full run this week
  2. Distribute and read a new piece once current one is prepared and performed completely

Music Rehearsal:

    1. Continue identifying dynamic changes and rehearse
    2. Isolate trombone line during the end of the first strain for accuracy of quarter notes agains moving melody lines
    3. Perform full runs
  2. Danse Jubliante
    1. Continue working to increase tempo on first half
    2. Isolate slow passage for more together playing of chords
    3. Work to balance chordal sections among all voices
    4. Focus on pushing snare for faster tempo in sixteenth note passages
  3. Bay Town Festival
    1. Isolate short trombone passage that leads into the final section
    2. Reinforce the rhythms in the closing measures for accuracy
    3. Begin performing full runs
7/8th Grade

Objectives:
  • Rehearse Pops Music
Warm-Up:
  1. Two selected major scales
  2. Perform 3rds in an additional key
  3. One Octave Bb Chromatic Scale
Music Rehearsal:
  1. Superman Theme
    1. Continue playing full runs to steady the tempo
    2. Begin to incorporate accents throughout
    3. Work to balance the low voices with the melody and counter-lines
  2. Defying Gravity
    1. Isolate melody for rhythmic accuracy throughout
    2. Isolate the short fast passages in the trombone and horn that occur every four measures for rhythmic and note accuracy
    3. Continue to reinforce the last four measures in the flute and clarinet
    4. Perform a full run

    1. Perform full runs working on balance among voices

    2. Isolate the counter-line in “Spoonful of Sugar” in upper woodwinds
    3. Isolate the moving sixteenth passage at the end/closing section
      1. Work on repeated sixteenth/eighth passage to improve counting through

    1. Refresh sections in “Come Fly With Me” for rhythmic accuracy
    2. Work the transition into and out of “That’s Life” 
      1. Reinforce the trumpet pick-ups into the song
    3. Isolate the semi-chromatic triplet passage in the upper woodwinds from earlier in the piece

    1. Rehearse opening with solo
